Building expertise in speech, language and communication
We work in partnership with Best Practice Network to deliver the Speech and Language Support Practitioner Apprenticeship. This Level 5 apprenticeship supports teaching assistants and support staff to develop specialist skills in identifying and supporting speech, language and communication needs.
The programme brings together Best Practice Network’s experience in apprenticeship delivery and our specialist knowledge of speech and language. It focuses on practical support that can be used in everyday school practice.
Applications extended to May 6 to start Speech & Language Practitioner training this May
Overview
The apprenticeship leads to the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant qualification and includes additional Speech and Language Link certification. It is completed over 18 months and is delivered through online learning, training sessions and monthly coaching. Funding is available through the Apprenticeship Levy.
Who the apprenticeship is for
This programme is suitable for school staff who support pupils with speech, language and communication needs, including teaching assistants, SEND teaching assistants, learning support assistants and higher-level teaching assistants.
It is designed to help schools and trusts develop in‑house expertise in a common area of need and strengthen everyday classroom support.
Why this matters
Speech, language and communication skills underpin learning, participation and wellbeing. When needs are not identified or supported effectively, pupils may struggle to access the curriculum and engage fully in school life.
By developing staff knowledge and confidence, this apprenticeship helps schools provide earlier and more consistent support, reducing barriers and supporting inclusion.

Partnership delivery
Best Practice Network delivers the apprenticeship structure, training and assessment. We provide the speech and language content, developed by qualified Speech and Language Therapists and grounded in evidence‑informed practice.
The partnership ensures the programme is practical, relevant and aligned with the realities of school settings.
What practitioners will learn
Learners explore speech, language and communication development and how to recognise and respond to areas of need. They develop practical strategies to support understanding, expression and participation in the classroom. The programme also supports skills in planning, assessment and working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals.
How the programme works
The apprenticeship is completed alongside an existing school role. Learning includes online sessions, regular coaching and supported workplace application. Learners build a portfolio of evidence and complete an end point assessment that includes observation and professional discussion.
