MAT SLCN Audit

Review the effectiveness, consistency and strategic implementation of speech, language and communication needs provision across your Multi-Academy Trust.

Instructions for completing the MAT SLCN Audit

This audit is designed to evaluate Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) provision across the Multi-Academy Trust as a whole. It should be used to identify strengths, areas for development and priorities for strategic improvement across all schools within the Trust.

The audit should be completed once for the entire MAT, rather than separately for individual schools. Judgements should reflect how consistently systems, processes, expectations and provision are implemented across all settings within the Trust.

Who should complete the audit?

The audit should be completed by an appropriate senior leader with oversight of SEND, inclusion and/or school improvement across the MAT.

  • Director of SEND
  • Executive SEND Lead
  • Trust Inclusion Lead
  • Trust SLCN Lead or equivalent
  • Another executive or senior leader with responsibility for evaluating provision across schools
What evidence should inform your judgements?

Judgements should draw on evidence from across Trust schools and may include:

  • Trust strategies and improvement plans
  • School self-evaluation documents
  • Monitoring and quality assurance records
  • Workforce development and training records
  • Provision maps and intervention records
  • Assessment and outcomes data
  • Feedback from school leaders, staff, pupils and families
Important MAT-wide consistency rules

Scores should reflect the level of consistency across all schools, rather than isolated examples of strong practice.

Where there is a significant discrepancy between schools for a criterion, for example some schools would score 1 or 2 while others would score 3 or 4, the MAT score should not be higher than 2.

Where all schools would be judged as either 3 or 4, select the lowest score evidenced across the schools. A score should not be increased simply because one or more schools demonstrate exemplary practice.

1 Not in place
Largely absent across the MAT, with little evidence of a Trust-wide approach.
2 Developing
Partially in place but implementation remains inconsistent across the MAT.
3 Established
Securely established with clear Trust-wide systems and generally consistent implementation.
4 Embedded / Exemplary
Fully embedded and consistently demonstrated across all schools in the MAT.
