What is DLD?

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a diagnosis given when a child or adult has difficulties talking and/or understanding language, where there is not any known cause for the language difficulty.

DLD is not always easy to spot but it affects approximately 2 children in every classroom. Unsupported it can have serious impacts on literacy, learning, friendships and emotional well-being. It is a lifelong condition which children just ‘don’t grow out of’ so identification and support are essential. Many students who exhibit behaviour or reading difficulties may have DLD.
